Do You Suffer From Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal glands are responsible for regulating the body’s response to stress. When stress becomes excessive or is not managed well, the adrenal glands’ ability to perform it’s job is compromised

Chronic stress is maladaptive and disrupts the adrenal gland’s normal pattern of cortisol release.

Cortisol is the main adrenal hormone used to manage a stressful situation. Typically, Cortisol in released in response to a dangerous situation and then the level decreases when the threat is abated. In a chronic stress situation, the cortisol does not return to normal and continues to be released, causing an increase in the amount of an individual’s belly fat

The highest amount of cortisol is secreted by the adrenals in the morning providing energy to start the day, with levels then decreasing throughout the day. In adrenal fatigue, patients often feel tired in the morning upon wakening, despite a good nights rest. They are “wired” at night, having a difficult time winding down from the day and falling asleep.

Adrenal Fatigue

Are you experiencing any of these Adrenal Fatigue symptoms?

  • Interrupted sleep cycles
  • Unable to fall asleep
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Easily confused
  • Crave salt or sugar (to the extent of binging)
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Increased susceptibility to infections
  • Digestive problems (GERD, Irritable bowel syndrome)
  • Reduced tolerance for stress
  • Craving for sweets and salty foods
  • Development of new allergies
  • Exacerbation of skin condition (eczema, psoriasis, urticaria, acne)
  • A tendency to feel cold (many confuse this with hypothyroidism)
  • Aching joints
  • Diminished sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Osteoporosis

Treatment varies depending on the stage of adrenal fatigue. Saliva testing is performed and the patient is placed on the appropriate adrenal support supplements for them. These can include calming herbs (valerian root, chamomile, hops‚ passion flower), adaptogens (such as ashwaganda, rhodiola, and holy basil), adrenal extracts, vitamins and minerals (Magnesium Glucinate, vitamin B, vitamin C, Vitamin E).

If not treated in the early stages of adrenal fatigue, the body may no longer be able to produce the needed amounts of cortisol and patients end up with low cortisol levels. Fatigue, pain, and stress may result in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Medications may be required for severe adrenal fatigue resulting in hypocortisolism. In this case, low doses of hydrocortisone (by prescription and closely monitored) have been found to help when the body fails to produce sufficient amounts of cortisol.
